Second Grade News

January 26-February 1, 2007
Friday-No school
Monday-We made arrays in math. We used quotation marks in writer’s workshop.
Tuesday-We did symmetry on the computers. We chose our “seed” for our narratives.
Wednesday-In math we started division. We got a new student named Ty.
Thursday-The whole school read silently for I Love to Read Month. In geography we studied a map of Florida.
Next week/announcements:
If students wear boots to school, please remember to send shoes in their backpacks.

Second Grade News

December 1-7, 2006
Friday-Some of us started to publish our poetry. We’re adding 2 digit numbers in math.
Monday-Ms. Kerri taught us about cooperation. In culture class we learned an African checkers game.
Tuesday-In math we practiced partial sums algorithms (adding 2 digit numbers). In Spanish class we are learning about Mexico.
Wednesday-In culture, Ms. Dorow taught us Swahili words for animals and numbers. In math we used rods and cubes to add 2 digit numbers.
Thursday-We learned about attributes in math (shape, size and color). In geography we worked on a street map of a town.
Next week/announcements:

Thursday, December 14th-5:30-7:00 P.M. Hmong New Year celebration. Everyone is invited!!!

Second Grade News

November 24-November 30, 2006
Friday-No school
Monday-We started Spanish class. In math we practiced adding multiples of 10.
Tuesday-We learned Sudoku. In culture we learned new words about Africa (horn, strait, isthmus and cape).
Wednesday-We measured to the nearest inch and centimeter in math. Ms. Mitzuk came to watch us do the Daily Five.
Thursday-We learned “ballpark estimates” in math. In geography we studied the U.S. map.
Next week/announcements:
It was really great meeting all of the families at conferences. Thank you for supporting your student at home and at school. It will have a huge effect on their learning. Remember, they should each be reading every night for 20 minutes.

Friday-In music we practiced tinikling. We went to the library and learned about the 300’s in nonfiction.
Monday-We rode scooters in gym. We made a “friendship flower” with Ms. Kerri.
Tuesday-We did fact families with dominoes. We practiced “Read to Someone”.
Wednesday-In geography we learned about the four directions. We practiced the Daily Four.
Thursday-We practiced our Daily Four choices for 25 minutes!!
Next week/announcements:

Friday-We started art and music. In art we learned about diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines.
Monday-Mrs. E was our guest teacher.
Tuesday-We earned extra free choice. We learned a song about doubles in math.
Wednesday-Mr. Ching came to our room and we used the laptops. We watched some of the Twins game.
Thursday-We each got a free RIF book to keep. We played Bench in gym.
Next week/announcements:
Monday, October 9th-ALC (after school tutoring) starts.

Friday-We learned how to play Reach for the Stars (addition game) in math. We decorated our writer’s notebooks.
Monday-We are starting our homework today. In gym we played with the parachute.
Tuesday-We used Wikki Stix to make <, >, and = signs in math. We started social studies.
Wednesday-We made up number stories in math. We played snowball tag and exterminator in gym.
Thursday-We practiced the “magic C” letters in handwriting (O, Q, C, G). Ms. Pershke taught us about the 500 section in the library.
Next week/announcements:
Tuesday, October 3rd-Picture Day-send money in the envelope I sent home if you would like to by pictures. If you aren’t happy with the pictures, they will do retakes.
Wednesday, October 4th-School fundraiser ends. Please send in forms and all the money by this date.

Friday-We took a walk. We started handwriting.
Monday-In math we played a money exchange game with paper money. We went to the library to learn how to take care of books and choose “good fit books”. Tuesday-In handwriting we played the Mystery Letter game. We practiced our homework.
Wednesday-We learned about “Read to Someone”. We measured our height for our time capsule.
Thursday-We counted up and down with calculators. We started Daily Geography.
Next week/announcements:
Our all school fundraiser has begun. We are raising money for field trips and a new playground.
